Hello fisherman, We have been catching our limits of Stripers here on the Sacramento river. There has been alot of boat traffic especially on the weekends, including a striper derby in the area we have been fishing. Thank you to eveyone who fished with me on the Smith river for steelhead. It was not the best season we have seen, but hopefully next season will be better. We are now gearing up for striper season on the sacramento river, I will be fishing mid April thru May 10th. We are also taking bookings for the spring run of salmon on the Klamath river which will be one of the only rivers in califonia where you can keep salmon. This season will start mid May and run thru June to the first of July. Next is the fall run of salmon on the klamath river which runs August thru September and it looks like that will be a 1-2 fish limit. It is currently trying to snow here in Gasquet. The steelhead season has been a productive one, catching our limits of fish, with some real big fish being caught. We brought home a nice cow for the freezer. We are now targeting the Smith river, our first trip was thursday the 6th. We landed a beautiful 41 lb. chrome bright salmon, biggest salmon this season, and missed five other grabs. That same day there was a 20.8 lb. hatchery steelhead weighed in on the same official scale in Hiouchi. It was a productive day for most boats catching there limits of fish. There has been a mix of salmon and steelhead being caught daily, and the steelhead season will keep getting better. There have been some real nice size steelies being caught weighing from 15- 20 lbs., maybe there will be a new state record fish caught this season. We are getting a few steelhead and salmon, which should pick up by this weekend. Dorado, one of my buddies caught a nice white Marlin which is rare for the waters that we are fishing, we also caught a tuna, along with other bottom fish. I fished the van duzen and the eel rivers over the weekend. Sunday was the van duzen where we hooked 8 steelhead and landed 6. Saturday we fished the eel landing 2 fish, friday on the eel we hooked 7 and landed 6. We fished the smith river on thursday 3/15 hooking 4 steelhead and landing one. I have some open dates left for steelhead season here on the smith. The smith closes on the upper river after 3/31. Sorry for the lack of reports, we've been busy with company from Idaho. We are sill catching steelhead here on the smith. Monday was the last day I fished, we got four steelhead. I fished the derby over the weekend. I had Chuck Yeager in the boat,we got a couple of fish. The derby was a great success as always, we did not place but had a good time. The river is in good shape after the much needed rain we have received. Saturday I fished Perry & Mary, they landed three nice steelhead. Sunday I had a cancelation. The river is very low and clear, but still catching good numbers of steelhead. There is very light boat traffic due to the conditions which is good for the fisherman that are here! Today we landed two nice steelhead to 14 lbs. Yesterday I had a cancelation, went fun fishing and landed 3 steelhead for a short drift in the morning. Tuesday off. Monday hooked 5 and landed 4, Sunday hooked two. We need rain, but the forcast does not call for any amount of rain that will help the river for at least the next five days. It rained on us all day, with high winds, then rained all night and blew the river out for this morning. It is currently not raining, but we are forcast for a soaker tonight. Yesterday was our first day sidedrifting for steelhead and we had an awesome day. The first cast out landed a steelhead about ten pounds, from there we hooked seven and landed five. We also caught a chrome bright salmon weighing 28 lbs. on 8 lb. test line. That was about a thirty minute fight before we landed that beauty. What a great way to start the steelhead season. We are back from Idaho and back to fishing the smith. Today we had three grabs and landed one beautiful chrome bright salmon weighing 35 lbs. There was a 54 lb. salmon caught today by John Klar. Yesterday a big steelhead weighing 17 lbs. was caught on the smith and a 18 lber. last week. The river is in fine shape and is fishing well, with the boat traffic being very light. We went out on the smith the last two days. Yesterday we landed one chrome bright salmon and sat. we hooked a hog, fought it for about 15 mins. and lost it. There was alot of action there catching both salmon up to 25 lbs. and steelhead. I then spent a couple of days on the Klamath river at Seiad valley. I am now home targeting the Smith river. We fished the smith on sunday, with four boats in our group, cathing some beautiful chrome bright salmon weighing 25 - 35 lbs. The smith river level at jed smith is 7.2 and slowly dropping. The salmon fishing on the Klamath river has been good. It was a late start for the springer season due to all the rain and high river flows, but once it started there were alot of nice salmon caught. The fishing has been good. We just received rain here a couple of days ago which helped tremendously. It brought the water level up and added much needed color to the river. The steelhead have been a mix of chrome bright fish and down runners. There is a derby next weekend, this is the Raider derby, so there will alot of boats on the river. Becky Kinkade of the Hiouchi cafe passed away due to complications from a massive stroke. Becky was a big part of the fishing community here. She fed the fisherman hot meals in the mornings and would send them off with the most awesome sack lunches you've ever seen. She would fondly greet them all in the morning, show them the latest fishing pictures and throw in a story or a joke. Becky loved fishing season the best because the fisherman were always so happy to be here. Becky put her heart and soul into the cafe and enjoyed what she did. If someone came in off the street and needed a bite to eat, but did not have any money, Becky would feed them, no questions asked. As her husband Donald said " Becky wore her heart on her sleeve " and she did. We will all miss her, she was a beautiful woman. We love you Becky! As you know the Smith river has been blown out since last week due to all the weather we have received up here. We were on the river over the weekend and had a great time. Saturday we landed three nice adult steelhead with the biggest one weighing in at 15 lbs. The fishing has been on the fair side with a mixture of both salmon and steelhead being caught. The salmon are getting fewer and the steelhead action has been in smaller numbers with alot of half pounders being caught. It looks to be a great steelhead season, we are off to a good start. The salmon fishing has slowed down due to the low and clear water conditions. There are a few fish being caught, both chromers and dark fish, with some steelhead in the mix. We did pretty good down on the eel river, catching plenty of fish. Then back to the smith river where the conditions have been tough. We have been landing one to three fish per day. The river is so low and clear that the fish are very spooked, when you can see them, then you know they can see you! We are in the Perc derby today and tomorrow. Today we were on the chetco river and we landed one steelhead. We will be on the smith tomorrow. We have received about 14 inches of rain here in Gasquet in the last three days. Tuesday we wound up going out on the Smith in the afternoon. All we caught were alot of leaves. The river was very leafy and muddy. Of course, the last two days have been gully washers. The upper gauge at Jed smith park on Wednesday reached a peak height of 25.3 feet. Today the upper gauge went up to 26.3 feet. The Smith river has just had a good cleansing, it is now dropping and begining to clear. By Saturday the conditions should be just right for a steelhead/salmon show. There was a hefty 68 lb. salmon netted today near the mouth! This was on the radio today and should hit the local paper tomorrow. There are alot of steelhead in the system and the salmon are mainly being caught in the estuary although there are a number of fish moving up river. The fishing started out red hot, but has slowed in the last few days due to the low water and the warm temerature of the water which is at 73 degrees. The fish are there but they are not biting like they were. They need to release more water into the river to bring up the level and temerature, this will help the bite. Blue creek on down has been the best bet. There are alot of fly fisherman out now for the steelhead. There are a few salmon slipping up river, but most of them are in the estuary. The indians have been doing good netting salmon at the estuary, so it looks to be a great salmon season. We have a couple of prime weekend dates still open in September for salmon fishing in the jet boat on the Klamath. We have open Sept. 17,18, & 19 which is a friday, saturday, sunday, and Sept.25 & 26 a saturday and sunday. I also have sept. 7,8,9, & 10 open. September is booking up quickly so don't wait to long! Thank you to everyone who fished with me and read my reports. It could have been a better season, but we did see some real nice sprigers caught! The bite seems to be over by 8 - 8:30 a.m. I fished John & Kyle Davis of Reno on 6/9, 6/10, & 6/11, enjoy those fish! On 6/12 & 6/13 I fished Joe Bowman, Hal, & Stacey. Sunday we came off the anchor five times which was the best we did all week, we've been averaging 1-2 times a day. There have been alot of pull downs, with fish being caught daily, but not red hot numbers yet. The river is a litle high at this time. The salmon that are being caught are chrome bright fresh springers with sea lice. Ted & Kate of Guerneville, fished with me over the Memorial weekend and they took home a nice salmon. Monday and Tuesday I fished John Davis and Owen Kupfer of Reno. Monday we had six pull downs, we hooked four fish and landed three. Tuesday was a different story. We had six or seven pull downs, hooked four of them, but could not get one in the boat. It was just one of those days. We had a great time though, thank you John & Owen! Yesterday I fished a party of two, Max and Farrell. We hooked 8 fish and landed 6. The big fish was caught and released by Max, it was a beautiful 19-20 lb. hatchery buck. We hooked this steelhead in the forks and landed it at the covered bridge. It measured 37 inches long and 20 inches in the girth. Max battled with this fish for 25-30 minutes before he landed and released it. Today I fished a different group out of the bay area. The first cast out of the boat ramp at the forks we hooked, landed and released a beautiful 11 lb.native buck. We were side drifting bait, yarn and puff balls. All our fish we landed today weighed between 9-11 lbs. The sun was out in full force today and we are forcast for a couple of days of clear weather. Today I fished a party of two, Randy and Craig, who by the way want to thank the group who canceled for today. We hooked 8 fish and landed 7, with our biggest fish being a beautiful 24 pound steelhead! This fish measured 40 inches long and 21 inches in the girth. It is currently raining here, but we are not receiving enough to blow out the river, it is the normal Del Norte rain. I had a cancelation for Monday and Tuesday the 5th and 6th.
