Smith River
Steelhead

The Smith River is the premier wild steelhead river on the West Coast. These legendary fish are big, smart, and spirited, providing a heart pounding World-class fishing challenge. The run starts in mid December and continues through March 31.

For the latest news from the Smith, check our Fishing Report.

We also fish the Chinook Salmon run on the Smith which starts in mid October and runs through December. These fish usually run to about 20 pounds but a fish or two around 50 pounds are caught each year. The record was a whopping 82 pounds!

Some prime time fishing can be had from mid November to the first of the year when both salmon and steelhead are in the system at the same time.

The Smith is a small river system and water levels fluctuate rapidly. The best opportunity to fish is when the river is receding. Planning around this can be difficult as coastal weather can be unpredictable.

You may want to avoid the fishing derby weekends. Don't believe this river is only for the most experienced angler, it can be wonderful for everyone.

In addition to the fantastic fishing the Smith offers, the scenery is just as spectacular as the river winds through Jedediah Smith State Park. Call us and arrange an unforgettable fishing experience!
