Upper Klamath River

Towards the end of September, we head into the Upper Klamath where typically we catch tremendous numbers of fish. The fish run the full gamut from quality to quantity. Planning for trip can be very easy because the river does not get "blown out". The Upper Klamath provides a great opportunity for kids to get the fishing bug because of the large number of fish caught.

Klamath River Salmon

Steelhead usually arrive to the area in October and are usually in the system until February. Klamath River steelhead run to about 8 pounds with most fish being in the 4 - 5 pound class. The numbers of fish caught are absolutely incredible with 10 fish per rod days not uncommon.

In September, the King Salmon arrive to spawn. The fish, stack in the deep holes before heading to the spawning beds. The action is intense with hook-up after hook-up. The average fish is about 15 pounds, with the occasional larger hog being landed.

There are places where larger trout, steelhead, and Chinook can be caught. However, few places can rival the high quality non-stop action of the Upper Klamath whatever species you target!
